Artist’s Statement
I am invigorated by the exploration of humanity.
I believe art and theatre is alive. It is rooted in who we are as humans, who we have been, and who we can become. My practice centers around the depths of human emotion and sensation. Through my work I challenge relationships, the dynamics between love and hate. I am drawn towards stories that highlight the ugliest and most primal parts of human desires. I find it important to ask why? Why do we love, why do we hate, why do we do anything for anyone? I love people. I love being near people and my artistic pursuits have allowed me to experience a multitude of personalities, cultures, passions. I have an indescribable need to understand deep human emotion. I am attracted to large theatricality and to understand humanness: the intimacy of being alive on the GRANDNESS and storytelling of the stage.
I feel that it is important to recognize where you come from and not to shy away from how this has influenced your being. I put all of myself into my work - the exploration of humanity is also the exploration of myself. I am intrigued by the human body; how it moves, how it feels to be alive and point blank have a body, how different mine is from someone else's, how a character’s body might live within my physical form. Because of this intrigue I have found my practice leading towards body-mind centering. Particularly through the Viewpoints method, Myerhold’s Biomechanics, and the Laban practice, I originate my point of intrigue from the human body.
I am rigorous in the drive towards FINDING: Finding something new in text, a new moment, a new sensation, a new moment of connection. This finding has led me to deep collaboration. I find so much joy and inspiration in both devised settings and settings where the “theatrical hierarchy” is brimming with life. Significant in its importance for me is care for my collaborators during my process: respect for who they are, what they bring, and their bodies in space. Care is at the centre of my collaboration. Recently, my work has led towards working with theatre for young audiences, and expanded past performance into writing, collaborative creation, and directing. I aspire towards holistic, sensation focused practice whether that is in the form of acting, performance art, playwriting, or directing.
I love deeply. I love my art. I love every single person I have ever met.
